Rules of the Night World: Lengthy but needy!

Yes, I know this page looks incredibly daunting, but just read it, and trust me, you'll be surprised by how much you can learn here. By reading this... you'll save yourself from making a mistake and getting yelled at the Elders, the Council, or any members because of it.

1.     Please remember to use the correct headings. NW if it is related to the Night World and either OT (off topic) or TAN (tangent) if the topic is off.

2. To unsub from the list, do NOT send mail to the list requesting to be unsubbed. See here for more information.

3.     Do not post chain, "make money fast" or spam messages to the list or send anyone such stuff. They are extremely annoying and illegal too. You will be unsubbed if you send it to the list or if anyone complains that he/she was send it. No explanation will be given. Not sure what chain letters are? Go here

 4.       Please when responding to a message, quote enough from the original message so the others on the list can understand what and whom you are responding to. Delete whatever that is not relevant. And if you really have to send the entire message someone else wrote and all the replies to it, place your own message on the top! This is so that we don't have to scroll down right to the bottom to read your post.

5.     This list is an open and free discussion list in which anyone can voice their opinion, pro or con, so as long as they maintain a civil and mature manner.

6.     Do not use excessively large signature files, and at most, SIX lines. Not six lines per quote! We do not wish to scroll down to find that your signature line is longer than your message much less read an entire paragraph. I don't care what other clubs you belong to, and unless you give an excellent reason as to why you need more than six lines worth of signatures, this rule remains!

7.     If you go off list for any extended amount of time, please e-mail Cassie off list to let her know that you will be out of town. That way, she could be able to make sure they you stay in the club.

8.     Lively debate is encouraged, but flames and abusive behavior are strictly forbidden. The list owner (Cassie) reserves the right to drop disruptive users from the list. If you have a problem with any member, contact Cassie, or any or all of the Elders about it. Just one complaint from one member will not do anything unless we determine it is more than a personal problem. The offending member will be posted about the problem in an effort to work it out. If we do get several complaints from members on one, they will be kicked out, no questions asked.

9.     Please do not cross-post the Night World posting address with any other mailing lists, personal e-mail address or news-to-mail gateway. While this practice may seem innocuous, it can potentially cause confusion from misdirected e-mail.

10.     When posting about any books, please maintain spoiler warning for those who have not read the book. Put spoiler in your subject along with the title of the book. Leave about twenty lines as spoiler space at the beginning of your message. This is especially important for there are a lot of members who do not live in USA or Canada and sometimes only receive the books several months after it has been published. Be sensitive!

11.     The Night World mailing list is a Bully Free Zone. Members are expected to be respectful of others' views and feelings, and in return, can expect the same consideration. You are free to request the termination of off list communication with any member at any time for any reason. And again, Cassie reserves the right to drop any member from the list if she or anyone feels that you are purposely being disruptive to the group.

12.     Writings are welcome, but be prepared for constructive criticism.  We have several writers on the list (Cassie, Kaitlyn, Poppy, just to name a few) who are more than willing to help you improve, edit, go through… your writings. Please do not cross post your stories to the TMC writings list, or to any other lists at the same time you post any writings to the Night World address. For more information, read the FAQ for submissions.

The Awakening archives writings that have appeared on the NW mailing list. To reach there, please go here.

13.     Send all constructive criticisms, thoughts, comments of fanfics to the writer and *not* to the whole list. Extra note: This was sent to the NW writings list by Cassie on 07 Jan 2000, and it should be duly noted.

" Seems like some people on this list need to learn how to critique instead of criticize. I received the following msg from a member concerning a problem she was having:

some people didn't appreciate the "fodder" that I was sending to this list and asked that I stop sending it.

NONE of you have the right or privilege of telling anyone on this list NOT to send their writings. That is uncalled for and rude and I will not tolerate it. You don't like what they are writing? Don't read it. Or POLITELY Offer helpful ways to make it better, like "i saw you used the word 'effect' in the sentence 'he effected her in ways she never imagined'. i thought you might like to know that actually the way to spell it in that use is Affect, like affections. Effect is more like cause and effect. Hope that helps!"

You do NOT EVER tell someone to stop sending something to the list. You have a legitmate problem with their writings, you bring it to me. If someone is ever told to stop sending to the list, that will come from the list-owner, which jsut happens to be ME! Not anyone else.

But if I ever hear of this happening EVER again, the person who is doing the criticising will be kicked off the writings list and if you send in a writing, you will learn what true criticism is as I am a professional editor, which means I get paid to go over what other people write. "

14.     Send all your stories to the NW Writings mailing list. Do not send them to the main list. The address in case you're not sure is nw_writings@topica.com

15.     Post only one story a day. Meaning only one part of your story a day. It helps to keep up the suspense of your story, and also prevents the writings list from clogging up.

16.     Do not compare this club to other clubs. Yes, we were formed from members in TMC and the AOL LJS clubs. But this is our OWN club, in and of itself. Comparing onlist to another club is tantamount to flaming and will get the member unsubbed for at least two days. If you absolutely must compare NW to any other club, send it to Cassie OFFLIST. It will be duly noted and probably trashed.

17.     The members in charge of this list will be strict and tough, especially on the listserver. We have learned through experience that this is the best way to be. But at the same time, strive to be fair and understanding.

18.     Contact Cassie if you need anything. Problems, suggestions, praises, flames, web page design/ideas, comments, project ideas, club ideas, advice, listserver stuff, new members, unchosen names, anything.

19.     All questions regarding the listserver, please contact Cassie

20.     Poppy can be contacted for any questions, suggestions or comments relating to the FAQ.

21.     If you feel you must be rude to any of the Elders, or to any charter members or simply anyone on the list, contact Cassie about it.

22.     Sign ins will be held three times a year, beginning Jan 00. So that means a sign in every four months. You have to sign in if you want to remain on the club.

23.     Do not send one liners posts to the list. Also, do not send 'I totally agree with you' sort of posts. They can be sent to the owner of the post and NOT to the list.

24.     Bear in mind that the list is made up of very different people, with different lifestyles, religions and races. Be sensitive in your posts and remarks.

25.     It came to our notice a while ago about the dramatic increase in posts. We have had several members unsubbed due to the high traffic. Therefore, please follow all the rules above. Meaning no one liners, limit your TAN messages to less than one a day, when sending feedback to a writer, send it to the writer personally and not to the whole list! And finally, again I stress, no cross postings. We do not want to know how your day at school was, the fact that you had been unsuccessful in locating a LJS book or simply posting messages to friends which should have been moved to private email.

26.     It has also came to out notice recently that some members are being harassed. If you have been such a victim, please let us know, so we are able to deal with the culprit. No one is to stalk, harass… any of the members in the club.

27.     We had a situation in December 1997, where some members were typing out parts of LJS books and sending it to members who do not have the certain book. This is illegal! The Night World has no part in this, and we do not condone it. So do NOT send any mail regarding this to the list. Simply don't send anything that's a copyright infringement to the list!

28.     Problems regarding fellow members should be dealt with off list. You can either complain to the Elders or try to settle the situation among yourselves. And please, be mature about it. Do not cuss, do not whine, and do not sulk. See numbers 8 and 11 for more details.

29.     If you have any projects or something you would like to contribute to the NW, please bring it up to Cassie. She will then usually bring it up to the Elders, and we would discuss it. After that, we will let you know whether it has been approved, or not.

30.     If you happen to be on the digest mode, please change the subject header from Re: NW Digest #xxx to something that reflects your subject.

31.     Please be aware that you're not allowed to send literary work that has been sent to the Writings list to other people via email or in any form. Basically, you're not allowed to reprint it in any form as it is against the copyright of the author. You're also not allowed to post the works on your archive etc without the permission of the author. Therefore, if you wish to do any of the above things, ASK for permission!

32.     We are not recognizing any more LJS related clubs other than the ones we have placed on the site, so please don't email us to put a link or banners of your site on the Night World site. Please do not promote your club on the NW mailing list as well.

33.     Please, for the love of God / Goddess do not email the list saying that Strange Fate is out because it's not. Read the latest news about Strange Fate, so until you actually have the much awaited book in your hands, then let us know that you've got it.
